Post-Hoc Fallacy

...Canada implemented their gun-control laws their crime rate was even lower than ours! That means their crime rate actually went up after they employed their gun-control laws. You could also say that automobiles are more dangerous today than in 1950 because there are more deaths today. While this statement it true, there are literally millions more people driving automobiles today than in the 1950s. Another would be to say George W. Bush couldn’t manage money because we have a 100 trillion dollar deficit. This is also true; however, the nation has always had a deficit, even before George W. Bush took office. A final example would be stating people are more wasteful today than they were 100 years ago. This statement isn’t true because there are simply more people today contributing the same amount of waste; therefore, there is more of it. Post Hoc Fallacy The “Post Hoc Fallacy” comes from the mistaken assumption that “if B follows A, then A was caused by B. These mistaken correlations can be cause by many things including chance, real relationship (but difficult to prove), no correlation between the two variables, and the correlation is inferred to continue.
