Hieronymous Bosch

...are no records on how Hieronymous learned his talents. Some sources say that his uncle probably schooled him as a painter in their family studio.  One of Hieronymous’ first drawings was “The Man-Tree”(also known as the “Tree Man”). He created this disturbing piece in the 1470’s, using only pen and bistre on paper. No one can really interpret the drawing but can only say its how the mind of Bosch worked. When people saw this picture they knew there would be more to come from Bosch. Years later, Bosch became a member of the religious “Brotherhood Of Our Lady”. The “Brotherhood of Our Lady”, was a religious group associated with the Saint John church. This allowed Hieronymous to have an incite on how the church was and later on brought more inspiration to his works. More than most of Hieronymous’ paintings were religious. Which brings his next painting, called “The Stone Operation”, which was created sometime between 1475 and 1480. It was made w/ oil on a panel. “The Stone Operation” is significant because its Bosch’s first “real painting”. Hieronymous was very popular in his small town, so many wealthy people saw him as one of their own. Sometime between 1479 and 1481, Hieronymous married the very wealthy Aleyt Goyaerts van den Meerveene. Bosch was a very religious person. After marriage, Hieronymous remained with the church. Bosch’s inspirations came from the corruptions which the church were responsible for. He used most of his next paintings to satire the church. The most famous satirical paintings were, “ The Garden of Earthly Delights, the Temptation of St. Anthony, and Hay Wain.” “ The Garden of Earthly Delights”, was a depiction of “hell“.
