I didn’t get to ask him how he became an officer but Im guessing it was ROTC commissioned because he didn’t go to West Point. The First question we asked was for the Captain and the Sergeant’s family backgrounds. We were given the ideas for these questions from Howard Gardners leading minds. In Leading minds Howard gives his theories on characteristics of a leader in his Antecedents of Leading. Howard says”Famous men are usually the product of an unhappy childhood. The stern compression of circumstances, the twinge of adversity the spur of slights and taunts in early years are needed to evoke that ruthless fixity of purpose and tenacious mother-wit without which great actions are seldom accomplished.(Gardner 33 1995)”. Given the knowledge of this statement we decided to ask this question to see if Gardners statements held any truths to them at all. Both the Captain and the Sergeant said they had strong family backgrounds. Both also took a greater interest towards there mother because she was at home more often than there fathers. Both of them said they had strong family ties that were also in the military, brothers, fathers, and grandfathers as well. What really grabbed my attention was when the Captain told me about his leadership experiences. He told me that the hardest part of the military was Leadership. Because you have to factor in all the different variables. Be know do is the armies motto. You have to be accountable and then know exactly what’s going on.
