The novel tells the story of a German factory owner, Oskar Schindler, who saves the lifes of over a thousand Polish Jews during the Second World War through setting up his own camp for them by claiming that they are essential skilled workers for the war effort. Although brutality towards Jews was encouraged at that time Schindler treated his workers with respect. The Nazis had pledged to destroy the Jewish population in Europe yet Schindler promised his staff that with him they would survive. The novel begins by describing Schindler’s childhood and private life. The writer highlights Oskar’s desire to move to Cracow to make a fortune and become “his own tycoon”. Schindler is portrayed in the opening chapter as a philanderer who frequently dines and entertains with beautiful women even though he has a wife at home. Instantly, the writer stressed that the story is about “pragmatic triumph of good over evil” and this therefore sets the key theme of this powerful novel as well as capturing and intriguing the reader from the beginning...
