...lent chapter because it gave the reader an example of how the troops were so ready to go to war that it seemed they did not think about the consequences. Most of the men are writing to their families telling them how great it is the first week of camp. You get to sleep in a bed, shower, eat good food, have women wash and iron your uniform, and most of all no fighting. Then it gets into the letters sent from men who are in battles everyday, fighting the war. You read the letters and you almost want to cry because as you read the letter you just feel so bad for what they are going through then at the end when you think it can’t get any worse it says they died. Not only are they there fighting for their country, but there dying for the country but the men who are dying are nineteen or twenty and you say to yourself “that could have been me.” Even the men who might be the fortunate ones to make it through the war have to then cope with the mental pictures that will hunt your dreams for the rest of your life. Towards the end of the book the author uses letters from men who are writing home to families begging to get out of the war. Many of the letters may not be written by the same person as the first chapter but you...
