...nts who came in the 1900’s came on ships called coffin ships where they were packed into the steerage and it took them a little over a month to reach the nearest harbor in Canada. Also, very few people made it alive to Canada because there was very bad hygiene and very little food so many people died and were thrown overboard. However, Gurpreet’s trip was much less severe with him having to drive ten hours to get to the nearest airport and then twenty hours on a plane to get to Vancouver. Hence, one can tell there was a major difference between the journey of a typical immigrant and Gurpreet. Not only is there a difference between the journey of a typical immigrant and Gurpreet but also there is a difference between where they ended up going and how their lifestyles were. For instance, a typical immigrant moved to Upper Canada or Lower Canada’s Eastern Townships because that was where they could get land for themselves. On the other hand, Gurpreet went straight to Vancouver because that was where there was supposed to be lots of job opportunities. Also, typical immigrants had much harsher lifestyles than Gurpreet did because of the weather. For instance, the weather in Upper and Lower Canada didn’t get much higher than -20 degrees Celsius in the Winter, so the new immigrants had to be prepared by having firewood, food and supplies stocked up for Winter time. Gurpreet however, only had cold temperatures of 3-5 degrees Celsius in Winter and didn’t have to worry about such things. Furthermore, typical immigrants lived in very deserted places and their nearest markets were miles away unlike Gurpreet who lived in a city and the nearest market was seconds away. Thus, one can see that the places and the lifestyles of a typical immigrant differed greatly from Gurpreet. Along with the differences of journeys, places they lived in and the lifestyles of a typical immigrant compared to Gurpreet; there were some similarities like why they had come to Canada. For example, a typical immigrant and Gurpreet mostly left their home country because they came in search of a better life either it is for their future kids or their own family. Moreover, typical immigrants and a person like Gurpreet always had mixed feelings towards coming to Canada since they were leaving there loved ones behind.
