Stereotypes of Reality TV

MTV’s The Real World portrays gays negatively in the sense they are all horny and promiscuous, which is not always the case. In every season the show involves anticipating how and when these gays or lesbians would come out to the other cast members. As every season rolled on, the African American would be portrayed as a militant, a player, hostile, confrontational, or some cases a bigot. Every season the black person on the show is put into a position to defend his ort her race, which to me is offensive, but to MTV it is good television. Personally it is hard to handle MTV’s blatant stereotypes. MTV seems to portray every one of these individuals as sex crazed, and in 2002 the PTC reported that there was a total of 847 instances of sex, language, and violence logged in to89.5 hours of televised reality shows( ). MTV knows they are picked up by a prominent young audience and the responsible thing to do would be to try to break the stereotypes instead of causing them. The viewing core audience of The Real World are among the age group of 13 to 34( Weinraub, 2001).
