Comparing Prisons with Universities

...udy. One has to complete a certain curriculum on a subject while also holding a good standing with the university in order to earn the degree of choice. The institutions of the prison and the university have several differences and similarities. First I will point out the various differences they have. The main difference that comes to mind when I compare these two institutions is choice. When one goes to prison he/she doesn’t usually have the choice whether or not to go. They are sentence by either the state of federal government and the person being convicted has no say so in the matter. The kind of prison and the length of time that person has must stay is up to the presiding judge. On the other hand when a person is involved with a university, they make most, if not all of the decisions and have many different choices to make for themselves. Most of the time a person can choose whatever university they want to attend with respect to certain things, such as income. But for the most part there are many different options for that person. Unlike prison, an individual can also choose the duration of time spent at the university. Some people go to a two-year institution or four-year institution. As well as these two options, there are also technical schools that one could choose to attend that have certain time periods of completion. Also one can leave the university at any point in time if the feel the need. For whatever reason a person can quit and choose not to go to the university anymore, unlike prison where you have to stay until your sentence is up. Another difference between prison and the university is discipline. While both have certain degrees of discipline, the prison system is much more harsh than the university. When rules are not obeyed is the prison it usually results is harsh punishment, such a confinement or abuse by prison authority. When rules are not obeyed in the university, it still leads to some degree of punishment, but not the degree of that in which the prison enforces . One can neglect the rules and procedures of the university and will result in some form of punishment. An example of this is when a student cheats on a test. This is a big offense and is not tolerable by any means, but usually results in a failure to continue the exam and possible a referral to university board. As well as differences these two institutions have some similarities. One similarity between the two is the presence of learning. One main goal of the prison and university is to teach the people involved in both something. While the curriculum is obviously very different, the individuals involved in either the prison or the university should learn something from their experience. In my point of view prison tries to teach the inmates the lessons of how to act in society and the rules of the law by confining them to prison bars and walls. While in some cases this may not work, I think this is and should be the goal of the prison. With the university, knowledge is passed on by professors about certain subjects for the purpose of taking a certain role in society, whether it be to become a doctor or an English teacher. In both cases something is taught to...
