Role of Fathers in Society
... Today, it is common to see both men and women blurring the gender lines. Women have become successful in many male-dominated professions such as judges, top executives, and doctors. Job opportunities for women have allowed many mothers to work full time. This forces fathers to change because the mother is not at home twenty-four hours a day catering to her children. With the equal workforce comes equal income for both men and women; men are no longer the sole providers for their families. Before, women and children relied on fathers for money to pay for groceries, clothes, mortgages, cars, and other commodities. Nowadays, many families have two incomes and mothers and fathers share the role of financial contributor. Both the equal workforce and shared responsibility of finances leads to the changing role of fathers within family life. Men are spending more time at home with their children. Many daycare centers are also evolving with our culture. They offer weekday classes entitled “Daddy & Me” (an expansion on the classes “Mommy & Me”) that give fathers opportunities to go to playgroups with their children, an activity previously reserved for only mothers.
