A Girl Playing Baseball?
...he man on the side and told him he had forgotten to give me a form. That was when it all started. With a deep chuckle the man said, "Girls can't play baseball." I felt the tears begin to fill my eyes. "You can sign up for softball over there at the other field." he told me. But I was not there to play softball, I was a baseball player. When my aunt took me home I ran in sobbing, I told my father what had happened and he was furious. He called Frank Horn who was the president of Little League in my county. Daddy explained what had happened, Mr. Horn then informed dad that originally girls had played softball and boys played baseball, and that there was noting he could do about it. Mr. Horn then offered a little glimmer of hope. He said that if we called the comminisher and got his approval then he would place me on a team. Dad then called the Little League comminisher in Pennsylvania, once again he explained the problem and said that if nothing was stated in the rule book that said girls could not play then we would file discrimination charges. Quickly the comminisher changed his tone and said he would call Mr. Horn and tell him they could not keep me from playing. The next morning while I was eating breakfast the phone rang and mom answered it, when she hung up the receiver I asked who it was. She said that it was my baseball coach, I was playing for the Braves, I was so happy. Later that evening I had my first practice, before we got started the coach asked me to introduce myself to the team, so I did. That whole practice not one of my teammates spoke a word to me. After practice the coach told me not to worry that they would get used to me being around, he said that really they were just afraid that a girl was going to be better than them. He was right after a couple of practices they started talking to me, when I would make a good catch or get a good hit they would tell me good job. The day before are first game the coach gave us uniforms and told us what positions we would be playing, and where in the line up we would be batting.
