...y. Stella Leigh Woodrow was the second born in December of nineteen-seventeen to Mrs. Suzie Leigh Woodrow and Mr. John Robert Woodrow who resided in a farming community in rural Florida. She began walking four miles to school every morning at the age of five along with her older brother, Jimmy. During her teenage years she worked everyday after school to help her mother sew clothes, cook, and do household chores while her father worked hard farming to make money for the family. She had many household responsibilities including tending to the garden in which she grew peas, carrots and other vegetables which was used to feed hungry mouths at the dinner table. She was also responsible for tending to the chicken coop as well as feeding the hogs which were both raised for sale. At the age of seventeen, Stella met Richard. Richard’s family was new to the area moving here from Georgia. Richard often helped Stella with her chores as well as her father. Shortly after meeting the young couple married. With help from both families Stella and Richard built their first house together. Stella began growing a new garden to feed her and her new husband. After the first year they had their first boy which they decided to name Hubert after Stella’s grandfather. While managing her garden, taking care of their newborn and helping her husband raise hogs, which they received from Stella’s parents as a wedding gift, Stella struggled to balance all of her chores.
