Comparison of Arranged Marriages and Love Marriages
...rriages both partners seem to complete each other’s thoughts without actually speaking them aloud. They forget about the real world and create their own world where only the both of them exist. These are just some of the many wonderful facets of love marriages. The problem is that too many people seem to fall in love quickly and then get married, these sudden moves to marriage leads to a divorce (Tischler 52). The love marriages can be great, but the problem is that many people rush into marriage and hope everything will be okay and turn out for the best. During the marriage people become aware of the problems that they were oblivious before, from there the couple starts to get annoyed with the other person’s habits and things turn out for the worst. It leads to divorce when couples do not want to work out their problems. Arranged couples just answer the specifics and don’t get into a deep conversation. They usually communicate in the means of body language because it is less likely to get them in trouble. Lack of communication is a big factor in divorce, yet arranged marriages have a lower divorce rate (Demo 280). Couples in a love marriage communicate more when they don’t have to, but tend to over criticize each other, which leads to arguments and conflicts. Another problem in love marriages is that people fall in love too much. The person cannot distinguish true love from infatuation and they end up mixing the both so that one seems like the other. The media does play a role in instilling the ideas of love marriages in American culture. The soap operas on television always have someone who married at least three different people, which makes is ‘okay’ for society to do it because it is perfectly normal. An example would be the actors falling on love over and over again. This portrayal makes the whole idea of marriage seem like a mockery in this so called sacred institution of marriage. Arranged marriages are totally different from love marriages. Some differences are that the couple learns to love each other, they never exhibit any type of public display of affection, and there seems to be a certain restraint between the two lovers. Unlike love marriages, where a person meets someone, starts dating, and is in love at time of marriage, arrange marriages have ‘learned’ to love. How does one learn to love someone? An example would be a person who does not like a certain person, yet they get so used to each other that they learn to accept the relationship and therefore form a companionship known as love.
