This is what the that the Declaration of Independence declared “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”(Website 4) The leading writer was Thomas Jefferson; he was helped out by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. The Declaration of Independence was very important to the colonist. They couldn’t stand being controlled over Britain anymore. They fought wars and died for their country to stop Britain from controlling them but it didn’t work. That’s when the President George Washington and many others wrote up the Declaration of Independence to free everyone from the British. The Declaration of Independence also says the colonists have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.(website 4) This part of the Declaration of Independence really tells the colonist that they are free from Britain.
