PEOPLE RACE
...da with the type of popular content that Canada is not yet able to establish. This makes Canada's communication technologies culturally unique for the fact that they also receive a large amount of American culture through the media yet they tend to maintain their Canadian views and beliefs. Canada's use of communication technologies seem to bring up some issues as well. Although multiculturalism has great advantages such as; making people aware of other ethnic groups, educating people on other cultures, and making people more open minded to different cultures, some issues can arise from the idea of promoting multiculturalism. Multiculturalism tends to make individuals less nationalistic. They do not stay informed on the country but instead they try to stay informed about what is going on in their culture. With multiculturalism people tend to support their culture more then what's best for the country. (Canada Focus, 2002) An example that can be used to support this view is that of the USA. USA also being home for a number of different cultures does not have problems with nationalism to the extent as Canada does for they do not promote multiculturalism to the extent that Canada does. (Multiculturalism: The New Racism, 2002) Considering the vast amount of media content in the USA the number of ethnic or cultural programming does not amount to that of Canada's. Another issue brought about by multiculturalism is that of racism in the media. "Far from being a cure from racism, multiculturalism is racism in a new, self righteous guise." (Multiculturalism: The New Racism, 2002) Although the promotion of multiculturalism is meant to educate and make people are of other cultures it actually perpetuates racism. Multiculturalism promotes association with those of ones own culture or ethnicity. Multiculturalism portrays that an individual's identity and worth are determined by their race or ethnicity rather then their personal worth. In this way the use of communication technologies to support multiculturalism actually brings out the issue of lack of nationalism and a hidden form of racism. Although being able to receive American media content through communication technologies is beneficial to Canada, it also contains issues. The majority of media such as; movies, music and television programming that is viewed by Canadians is from the USA. Canadians prefer American media over their own. This is also due to the fact that there is such an abundance of American media that it is hard to miss. This takes away support from Canadian content. Canadian musicians, movies, and television shows do not get nearly as much support as American content. America has had such an influence on Canada through there media content that Canada has had to introduce laws and regulations to try and maintain culturally unique, as well as to try and provide competition to American content. Canada introduced the Broadcasting Act of 1991 to provide Canadians a "national broadcasting system owned and controlled by Canadians, offering a variety of programming of high standard and opportunities for the public to be exposed to differing views on matters of concern. It also states that C...
