Everyday Use
...ng she could do to please Dee and it hurt. When Dee returns home with her “husband”, she asks for many of the household items that her mother doesn’t want to give up. Wanting to please her daughter, mother gave in – until it came to the quilts. Mother almost allowed Dee to take them when she realized what she was doing. Dee rejected them when she was going off to college and now she wanted them for a decoration. Maggie, though, could make good use out of the quilts. Maggie loved her mother dearly and looked up to her. She was also hardworking and appreciated the little things, just like her mother. When the whole quilt episode was going on, she offered to give them to Dee because she knew how much her mother wanted to please her. But, mother refused. She knew that Maggie was just like her and would put the quilts to good use. Dee didn’t need help; she had changed her lifestyle because she hated the one she had as a child. But, Maggie was an excellent daughter that always agreed with her mother and was content with the life they had. Through mother’s words and actions, you can definitely tell that Maggie is the favored daughter. In “Everyday Use”, I believe the quilts stand for more than what they really are.
