His viewpoint is that when he goes in for a job interview, is the interviewer really looking at his qualifications and truly want him to work for his company or is he looking at him for the reason that he is black and that the company has to increase its percentage of black workers to prevent being harassed by the government for having to few minorities employed. So that the real reason he is getting a job is not for the fact that he has worked all throughout his schooling and received good grades but for the fact that he is black. This possibility upsets him because some other African American who did not work as hard as he did could walk in and receive the same job. So what motive does he have to work as hard as he does where a possibility could exist that his determining factor for receiving a job is because his skin color is black. Affirmative Action lowers the expectations of blacks. “Preferential treatment does not teach skills, or educate, or instill motivation. It only passes out entitlement by color, a situation that in my profession has created an unrealistically high demand for black professors the social engineers assumption is that this high demand will inspire more blacks to earn PhDs and join the profession. In fact, the number of blacks earning PhDs has declined in recent years.”(Steele) By lowering the expectations of blacks the direct effect is that they will start to expect less of themselves then in turn actually achieve less which causes something that was good in theory due an extreme disservice to the people that it is trying to help, much like that of communism. Another example of this is “But I think the unkindest cut is to bestow on children like my own an undeserved advantage while neglecting the development of those disadvantaged in he poorer sections of my city who will most likely never be in a position to benefit from a preference.” (Steele) Basically what this is saying is that the preferential treatment that society is giving these students does nothing because it addressing the wrong side of the problem. The problem that should be addressed is getting the children the help they need in school to succeed on their own in life. Also, to stop making excuses for these children and let them stand on their own two feet and to present the work that they actually did instead of using skin color as an excuse.
