... Senior and graduate level students from the Department of Family and Consumer Science's Dietetics program are those responsible for providing the nutritional counseling. This program can be used for any one who wants to start eating healthy, and have more energy; it’s not just for weight loss. For the students who are interested in losing weight, the center offers an exceptional program. Nutrition counselors can help you with whatever dietary concerns you may have. They can help students develop a healthy eating plan for whatever lifestyle they may have. The HIV and STD testing program is confidential, and free with an excellent state certified counselor. The test results are available in two weeks and students can call or stop by the center which is located in room 268 in side the HRC building for appointments. This program is great because when the student goes in they don’t take his/or her name down, it’s all done by a private id number which is given to the student in confidence. In order for students to receive birth control, they must first make an appointment, and take care of some paper work prior to the workshop. The men’s health clinic was a program which provided men with health education and promotion of a healthy lifestyle, but because of the budget cuts this program is no longer available, but Yumi Lee did mention that some other services are available to men and their health concerns. Finally the outreach program presentations are available for classrooms and organizations concerning all topics of health care. Currently they offer these topics: birth control methods, sexually transmitted diseases, breast and testicular examinations, substance use, and alcohol awareness. Tobacco awareness and prevention includes an in class presentation that could take place year round. This is a great opportunity for students to learn new and important facts about alcohol and tobacco. The presentation takes about 30-45 minutes. They can also do the presentation geared towards a specific topic upon request. The number to this program is (562) 985-4609. The center also provides the “Journal of the Health Resource Center.” This journal takes medical explanations and puts it in much simpler language for the students to understand. I found this very helpful and informative. Each journal addresses different aspects of health care. For example the Fall 2004 issue is mostly geared towards alcohol, its dangers and side effects. Other resources include The Health Beat Newsletter, which is a monthly newsletter concerning today’s health issues. Personal Assistance is assistance about health information. Multi-media health information offers useful educational tools such as access o the internet, CD-ROMS, etc. Another service available at CSULB is the Health Resource Center website, which provides information on diverse health topics including mental health, drugs and alcohol among many more. Finally, the peer educator and internship opportunities, which provides training and certificates given by SHAW and Outreach activities and it’s available to all students. Yumi did mention that the center really takes advantage of these journals and its many services to better educate the students here at CSULB. Ms. Lee didn’t tell me if the Health Resource Center had any have specific activities, but she did say that they try to go out and set up tables with a ton of information on health related issues. The center is also involved with health fairs, and Yumi did tell me that the fairs are a lot of fun and a lot of students like them because they get a lot of useful information. The individual’s involved can provide accurate answers to student questions. Other than that the Health Resource center is always available for in class presentations and demonstrations upon request. The Health Resource Center’s main long term goals are to continue to provide excellent health care for all students. They also want students to be educated all health related issues therefore the center always has a counselor available to answer questions. She also explained that a lot of students don’t know that their services are free, and if more students knew, they would probably get a lot more visitors than now. One goal which Ms. Lee would like to see happen is the return of the men’s health program; she thinks this is a valuable program for the male students here at CSULB. For the future the Health Resource Center hopes to make more diverse pr...
