The school system Altough many Americans attend nursery school, or pre school from an early age, formal education is considered to begin at the age of 5, when children go to kindergarten. The next 5 or 6 years of education are together called elementary school. Grades 7 to 12 are part of secondary school. In some places grade 7 and 8 are called junior high school. Other school systems have middle school, which last for 3 years. High school usually covers 4 years. Post secondary education, after 12th grade, is not free. Quality of education Young people must attend school until they are 16. About 45% of americans have some post secondary or further education. About over 20% graduate from a college or university. However, about 40% have very limited skills. Most educational institutions are public but there are some private schools as well Žstudents pay a lot of money, but they are not as strong as in GBR. There is a great difference b/w inner city and suburbian schools. Inner city schools are run down and in poor conditions, many parents try to move to suburbs were the public schools are good. In america there is a disagreement about what should be taught. The greates conflict is b/c moral and religious education. Sometimes a debate end in the court. For immigrants education in the US is debated, for example there is a debate in California what language should be used be used in schools. School Years runs from early September to the following June. 5 day weeks. 8.30-3.30pm. Students rarely have homework. Recess=can go out and play; usually playground attached. Luch period.
