...e size of Belgium and King Leo decided to use it as his own private property, instead of the property of the state. He wanted to develop rubber and other natural resources in Congo [end the sentence here] and even [start new sentence here - Even] though this at first brought more employment to the natives in Africa, his system of government eventually went sour. Soon a forced labour system was in forced [use place instead of force] in the camps and the native laborers were used as slaves and often beaten and tortured. Although King Leopold and the Belgium's [Belgians] were gaining a lot of power and resources in Africa, [unnecessary comma] and it was good for their nation, their was [there were] a lot of dreadful things [use acts instead of things] happening to the nation of Congo. This sort of slavery proves as an [delete proves as an, use is] immoral. Another example that supports the idea that nations shouldn't always put the interests of their own nation before the interests of other nations is the situation that took place when Britain took over Ireland. The Irish had, throughout history, [inaccurate phrase, use through most of their history] continued to make large efforts to win freedom from the English. But still in [delete but still, just use In] the 19th century the feelings between the Irish and the British was frustration and bitterness. The Act of Union that was implied [use applied] in 1801 didn't make anything better. The Irish Parliament at Dublin was destroyed, Ireland was only given a very small amount of representation [use limited number of representatives, instead of small amount of representation] in the British government, and the most important [use most importantly, not the most important] was that [delete the last two words] the British and the Irish were going to be governed by the same system;[-] the British Parliament. This caused a lot more tension between the Irish and the British and eventually led to bloodshed, poverty, [unnecessary comma] and religious resentment. The English rulers deprived the Irish of their well-earned land and gave it away to the English nobleman, most of which [use whom, not which] did not even live anywhere near Ireland. This meant that the Irish had to work on land that they did not own any longer and also were [were also, instead of also were] forced to pay rent and taxes. This was wrong in every way, shape, [unnecessary comma] and form[,] and the British government were only thinking of their own interests. Most of the Irish were Roman Catholic[,] however[, and] the British wanted to convert them all to their own religion, which was Anglican. Those who did not[,] were still forced to pay tithes to support the Anglican churches [use Church]. An example that supports the idea that only sometimes putting the interests of other nations behind the interests of their own nations would be when the American's [Americans] took over Panama. The American's [Americans] wanted to construct a canal that would link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans so that there would be a shorter route for trade and expand their economy. At the time[,] Panama was a colony of Columbia and after America asked them for consent to build a canal, they were refused. This is [use was] because Columbia wanted greater financial compensation and additional rights for themselves. However, in 1903 [a] revolution took place and the citizens of Panama declared their independence. Three days later[,] the United States recognized the independence of the new republic and two weeks later the Republic of Panama signed a treaty with America to build a canal. The American's [Americans] gave the Republic of Panama a smaller [use lesser] amount of money than was asked by Columbia and they and [ delete and] aided the Republic by preventing troops from landing and attacking Panama. In April[,] 1921[,] the United States of America revised the treaty and gave Columbia[,] and [an] extra twenty-five [use $25] million, in order to create peace and "amity and commerce". The main difference between the way that America expanded their economy and the way that most other nations increase their power is that they did it in the most peaceful manner as possible. Yes, the United States did gain economic expansion, put they did not interrupt the order of the smaller [use weaker] nation in doing so. The Panama Canal was opened July 12, 1920. Nation's [Nations] should only sometimes put the interests of their nation before the interests of others, as long as they are not doing any harm. During the Belgium [Belgian] takeover of Congo, the leaders were more than likely focusing on economic expansion. However, in doing so[,] they forced [use enforced] slavery and that is unacceptable because it creates sadness, pain, [unnecessary comma] and suffering to [use in] the native people. If King Leopold II had given the natives their God-given right to human freedom, both n...
