Communication In Our Governmenr
... There are testimonial ads which show someone talking on behalf of someone else. There are feel happy ads which make people feel good after watching it. Then there are the issue only ads that talk about one issue only. These types of ads can be very persuasive if used in the right way. There are those ads on T.V which are called one-on-one where the person talks directly to his/her audience through the screen. The attack and negative ads are the most dangerous ads there are. They could have many different motives like pressing the voter turn out so people won’t vote or just have a factually misleading ad which works well because people believe anything. Negative ads work well because they are better remembered because it excites people to see a negative ad and it sticks in their mind. The most effective negative ads are ones that don’t say a word about the opponent. Lastly, there are those ads which are funny and at times can even be ridiculous. Candidates use all these ads to help them in their campaigns. This is a very strong use of communication and politicians use it to their ability. In a presidential election, candidates can get very nasty with the content in these ads. Their only goal is to have people remember these ads when it comes time to vote. There are many different types of propaganda used in the election process. Things such as bill boards and flyers are very common. When people receive things in the mail they tend to read them simply because they are in sight. When sitting down in the morning drinking coffee one picks up any piece of paper to read. The flyers used in political elections can be very effective. An important factor is having the flyer or pamphlet be attractive to the eyes. Any headshot put on this advertisement has to be the best possible picture of the candidate because people are typically materialistic. The color scheme has to grab a person’s attention right away. Contrasts such as black and yellow or red and white are good colors to use because they stand out. The fancier a flyer is the more it costs to make so sometimes candidates go the cheap route and make unattractive trash that is sent to people’s homes. That could also hurt a campaign. Another effective way of communicating is having billboards. Billboards are these enormous things that get people’s attention right away as they drive by them. They work well when they are put on super busy streets and intersections. Politicians have to be careful when putting these signs up all over communities because people don’t appreciate the extra trash and they expect whoever put them up to take them back down, that’s where the party volunteers come in. Party volunteers are people who agree to do things for their specific party in order for their candidate to win the election. They go door to door getting surveys and persuading people to vote for their party. Volunteers are a way of communication other than news and media. There are a lot of different ways to communicate without television and radio. Town Hall meetings are held for people to come out and talk over issues concerning them. There are telemarketers who have a list of numbers to call and get their word out. The most significant way of getting through to people is when the actual candidate visits a place and talks to the public live. This gives people the idea that he/she actually cares about that certain place. Active politicians also help communicate when it comes to elections. Active politicians are people who come and stand at the polls and try to get people to vote for their particular party. These types of campaigning events are available to the public most of the time. The problem is that a very small percentage of the public actually takes advantage of these meetings or personal appearances. If you really think about it, would you rather be outside in late October when its 40 degrees, or would you rather be in front of your television with a TV dinner and a blanket. Unfortunately, most of this country thinks just like this. The problem is that when you get all of your news and opinions from the exact same source (TV), you allow the owners of that source to persuade you either way as opposed to letting the actual candidate talk to you live and let you make your own opinion. Another important aspect of how political communication dominates the political process is speeches. When it comes to speechmaking, leaders usually follow Aristotle’s Method of Speechmaking. This method has five steps and creates the perfect speech when used correctly. In step one, the speaker needs to make a transition from this was to this is, past to present. Then in step two the speaker needs to ask why? And make the transition to because while answering his/her question and informing the audience. In step three after answering because the speaker needs to counter comply with a but, and then in step four have a therefore… Step five is called the list/ladder where the speaker starts going down the ladder with different points he/she are trying to make. All these steps can be used throughout the speech to make people listen and understand. There have been many brilliant people in our history that were incredible speakers such as Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy. MLK was a Baptist minister who always had a way of hypnotizing his audience through his beautiful speech. In the “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King’s words flowed perfectly together and people were amazed. Kennedy was also a very talented speaker and in his 1961 Inaugural Speech he used his accent to his benefit and also in a way hypnotized people through his words. These two speeches were successful because they were written using Aristotle’s method. Speaking to a crowd of people can be very important when one is trying to communicate with the public. People will not listen if they are not interested. Televised debates are a great example how politicians handle themselves without a written speech in front of them. Debates clearly show what each candidate stands for and how they present themselves. Debates are recorded live and any slip up a person makes the entire country will eventually see it so they have to be very careful that they say the right th...
