In books, as well as life, there are characters who inspire individuals. In Steinbeck’s, “The Pearl”, the character Juana is the superstitious companion of Kino, a doomed pearl fisherman. In the midst of this unexpected tragedy, she must avoid evil and embrace goodness. Throughout the story, Juana demonstrates superior generosity and sacrifice. In all cases, she is supportive, faithful and nurturing. The point that really makes her heroic, though, is how she stays brave and hopeful through times when most people would resign. Juana is an inspiration for society. No matter what the situation is, Juana is continuously generous and sacrificial. She gave Kino the choice in what to do, even when he made the wrong decision. She helped him in every way possible, for example, she paddled their canoe, which was, generally, a man’s job. When Kino and Juana departed for the big city, she gave up her life for him.
