The author tells how Mary never got promoted at work just because of her race, even though she was more qualified and experienced then any of the white women. In the begginning of the book Mary is proposed to by Randolph Pettijohn and rejects his proposal. After this incident Mary begins to think about herself and realize that she only wants to marry when she is in love and not just for the sake of money. She starts to beleive that there is something inside of her that makes her push men away. When Mary finds out that Olive is engaged to this man named Howard she gets upset because she will miss her friend greatly. One night Mary was invited to a dinner party where she sees Byron Kasson, a man she has met before at one of Adora's gatherings, and completely falls in love. Byron is a writer who attended the University of Pennsylvania and just moved to New York to find some sort of job while he writes. After that night Mary and Byron begin to see eachother on a daily basis. They seem to both be in love and Mary can't believe how happy she is. One night at a ball Mary finds Byron dancing with Lasca Sartoris, a legendary women who was extremely beautiful. Mary was overwhelmed with sadness after seeing how he held her in his arms and she finds herself sobbing in a dressing room. The rest of the book was about the life of Byron Kasson and about is famous father Robert Kasson. It tells how he comes to New York struggling to find a job and meets Mary Love. It tells how he falls in love with Lasca. The story ends when Anatole Longfellow shoots Mr. Pettijohn for stealing his women and Byron coincidentally had a gun on him because he also wanted to shoot Pettijohn for being at Lasca's house. After Byron hears shots he runs out a shoots his gun into the air only to find the police watching him. It foreshadows that Byron will be blamed for Pettijohns murder. Comparing the novel Nigger Heaven to our text book The American Journey was interesting in many ways. Our book tells that six percent of the total black population was considered "free." Due to black codes, found throughout the North and the South, these free blacks were denied all rights of citizenship.
