There is something wrong with women in their 50s having babies with donated eggs
...atment. On the one hand, appropriately screened women aged 50 or older can successfully conceive via egg donation and experience similar pregnancy rates, multiple gestation rates, and spontaneous abortion [natural termination] rates as younger recipients, but on the other hand, they put up with an enormous health risk. The study proves that women over the age of 50 are more likely to suffer from a disease due to pregnancy known as preeclampsia (occurred in about 35 percent). It causes high blood pressure and, in severe cases, can lead to the death of mother or child. Older mothers are also more likely to get diabetes during pregnancy (occurred in about 20 percent). These rates are at least double the rate in younger woman. A majority can also expect to deliver via caesarean, the researchers warned. In-vitro fertilisation treatment in older women has also caused ethical controversy because it is absolutely unnatural to receive a child at the age of 55. The human body has a limitation in fertilisation, the menopause when hormones change and the production of new eggs is stopped, to prevent itself and the child from disease or deformation. To allow older women to become pregnant after menopause might not only be dangerous for them and their children but it also means that doctors interrupt the natural aging process and “play god”. Many IVF clinics set age limits on treatment or refer women over the age of 50 to review committees and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s ethics committee says egg donation for postmenopausal woman should be even discouraged. In our society, it might also be a disadvantage for the child to have parents, which could easily be their grandparents. Despite the argument that people in the sixties are still very active and wealthier than younger ones, they are not able to deal with their children’s every-day life anymore. They will be in the 70s at their child’s twentieth anniversary. With twenty, young people conquer the worl...
