...ck sneaks out of the house at night and steals from Miss Watson, the woman who wants to civilize Huck, and the Widow Douglas, the women who adopted Huck. When Huck hears Tom, his best friend, outside his window, “[He] slipped down to the ground, and crawled in among the trees, and, sure enough, there was Tom Sawyer waiting for [him].” (6) While Jim is asleep by the tree, the two of them play a trick on Jim that makes Jim think that he was struck by witchcraft. They go into the house and take candles from the Widow Douglas, but they leave her five cents in place of them. Even though Huck thinks what he did was bad, he doesn’t really realize that he is being nice by giving her money in place of what he stole. Even though Huck does a few things wrong, he does many good things. When Huck finds out that Jim, a runaway slave, is on the island with him, he is very happy about it. When he asks Jim why he is on the island, he is surprised by Jim’s answer. Jim makes Huck swear that he won’t tell anyone that he is running away. Huck keeps his promise to Jim even though he thinks “People would call [him] a low-down Abolitionist and despise [him] for keeping mum.” (43) Without Huck’s help, Jim would not be able to run away. During that time period, it was considered bad to help a runaway slave, but in reality it is a good thing. He knows that it is bad to help Jim, but Jim is so excited to be so close to freedom that Huck doesn’t want to let him down. When Huck finds out that Jim was sold, he thinks that it is God’s punishment to him for helping Jim escape.
