Stinky Girl
...inks she is stinky because her mother says so. She is affected greatly by her mother. For instance, “I must admit, I cannot smell myself because I have smelled scent into normality. I only know that I still emit a tremendous odour because my mother tells me so”. (Goto 42) She was dominated by her mother’s idea of stink. The stinky girl’s definition of stink was mistranslated and misunderstood plus her mother makes her feel that she is inferior comparing to others, of which created many psychological impacts in her life. Late in the story, she becomes conscious that the odor is not in the existence of her physical world but lies in a place of her unrealistic images. Although that she has narrated her dull live with tough mother, but she shows great respect for her, they rely their life to each other. The stinky girl likes to spend time and observe other people in the mall. She called herself as a “mall rat”. Because she never had any friends and does not has any chance to social or interact with other people in her life, therefore, she judges things negatively. The stinky girl has pessimistic ways of dressing other people in the mall, particularly in opposition to the children. She dislikes children and thinks that most of them are spoiled rats and believes that way because she has never gotten closer to any of them in her life. Until she has actually interacted with children, she realized that she never cared and know much about children but only in her own theory. She was living in the unrealistic world of her own. She could smell herself and recognizes that the odor is not a smell but the way she conducts herself. Scenes of uncertainties also rise in the end of the story. “I burst out laughing and the children laugh too.
