The Last Mission

...e war is almost over and Hitler is near defeat when Jack’s crew flies their last mission. Jack’s fighter plane is destroyed and he is the only survivor of the crew. He and other prisoners of war are marched to Germany. While they are on their march, they receive news that Hitler is dead, and the war is over. Jack was very brave taking his brother’s birth certificate. In fact he almost got caught several times. Amazingly Jack fools everyone and works his way through the Army Air Corps. He does a lot of good things in the book but many bad things too. He made many good friends in the story and also learned a lot about himself. He even met a girl, Dotty, during his training. But he lied about his age, and lied to his family about where he was and what he was doing. I think the theme of this story is do what your heart tells you is right. Jack is only fifteen but decides to lie about his age to join the Air Corps because he feels it’s his calling. The book tells of the games he played as a boy relating to the army and serving his country. He also grew up to do the things he dreamed about during his childhood. Jack felt as if he was a national hero. Jack relates to many of us because his heart tells him to do something that legally he can’t do. Many childhood dreams of future careers come true. Like Jack’s. I don’t know if I would consider Jack the brightest of people. He could potentially be imprisoned for his wrongdoing. He knew he could go to prison but continued onward at full steam. It shows that much good can come...
