...of 1961. A force of anti-Castro Cubans, trained by the CIA, failed in attempt to overthrow Castro as dictator of Cuba. The invasion had been planned before Kennedy took office, and President Kennedy allowed the invasion to proceed with important modifications limiting the degree of American support. President Kennedy stepped up courageously and confidently and accepted “sole responsibility.” According to the encyclopedia Britannica, President Kennedy was engaged in a great test of strength with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev from the late spring of 1961 to the late fall of 1962, this was also known as the Cold War. Toward the later stages of the Cold War, at the brink of World War III, when the Cold War was at its “warmest” point President Kennedy was shown aerial reconnaissance photographs of Soviet missile bases under construction in Cuba. From these bases a nuclear attack could be launched on much of the United States and much of the western hemisphere. Kennedy announced a United States naval and air quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. During this time President Kennedy was credited with negotiating with Soviet Premier Khrushchev to dismantle and withdraw its offensive weapons in Cuba.
