Social Darwinism was used and applied for many things in business and society. Native workers were stripped of their resources and land, because a lot of people thought that natives were not able to survive and were unfit. The military was a big part in the 19th century, with all the property wanting to be seized and all the wars fought for this, the military would need to be strong. The military would argue that the strongest would win, and would be the fittest. Social Darwinism also justified the reasoning of why workers were paid pennies a day sometimes for long strenuous work. Big businesses such as the oil company founded by John D. Rockefeller and Carnegie Steel Founded by Andrew Carnegie refused to acknowledge labor unions and other organizations. Carnegie Steel merged with J.P. Morgan in 1901, and was the largest merger to date. U.S. Steel Corporation had about 170,000 workers, but still did not care about labor unions. In Voices of the American Past, William Grant Sumner in his speech said, “ Let us turn our pity on him instead of the good-for-nothing. The negative was that society cared more about the working class who were able to work instead of the poor.” Sumner was talking about the way the big businesses thought of poor people.
