There are different styles of learning that people use, and they are the visual style (sight), the auditory style (sound), and the kinesthetic/tactile/manipulative (body, sensation, motion) style. Parents tend to prefer a different type of learning style that their child, so the parents should know and understand their own learning style. Visual learners learn by watching and they see the images of what they learn in their heads. Forty percent of students fall into this category of learning. Next there are the auditory learners, who tend to spell phonetically, and can have trouble reading because they don’t visualize well. Finally there are the kinesthetic learners, who learn best through movement and manipulation. These learners like to learn how things work. They make up fifty percent of students, and generally have difficulty learning in traditional settings. There are no bad or good learning styles. The learning style that is good for you may not be so favorable with someone else. The learning style that works for you has to do with how efficiently your brain uses information, and has nothing to do with how intelligent you are. We all learn best in our own way, and if you know which way works best for you, then you can learn more and do better in your classes, and in life. To find out what learning style works best for you, think about how you learn. When you think about a number, such as a padlock combination, do you picture the numbers in sequence in your mind, or do you visualize the number written down? If you do, then you might be a visual learner. Maybe you recited the number to yourself several times to remember the combination. Do you hear the numbers being called out one-by-one? If you do, then you might be an auditory learner. If you just punch in the numbers without much thought, you might be a kinesthetic learner.
