...tant task of an authentic person, “Life is a task of self-responsibility.” This is a “lonely” task, meaning that no one but the person attempting to be authentic plays a role in the authenticity of that person. In order to be authentic a person must make the decisions he/she makes on a daily basis “their own.” To make a decision your own means that a person truly believes that the decision made is of his or her own convictions and not in order to appease someone/something. Being aware of self-responsibility leads to a number of human emotions associated with unhappiness. A fear of failure is more commonly know as anxiety. An uneasy feeling or bad conscience will lead to anxiety which can easily be covered up in a person’s mind with excuses. These excuses are created in order to ease the anxiety felt, this will permit the person to fall into self-deception. Every person is responsible for their self-deceptions just as they are responsible for their authenticity. These excuses and self-deceptions create a wall inside a person separating the “I” and “Me” from each other. Is essence, a person separates themselves from themselves. When this happens a person is alienated from himself or herself. An authentic person is totally transparent. The “I” and ”Me” are one in an authentic person. I believe that many people in today’s society are not authentic people. I will use the example of teenagers here. Many teenagers are so preoccupied with what others think of them and how to fit in that they begin to lose their authenticity very early in life. The pressure from the no...
