...g so the act weakens judicial oversight that is needed to ensure checks and balances The provisions and amendments to the law within the US Patriot Act allow for the potential abuse of power at the hands of our government because of their infringements on our basic Constitutional rights and civil liberties. I agree that there are many aspects of the Patriot Act that are needed to ensure the safety of our nation against further terrorist attacks, but believe we must find a way to do so while protecting and preserving our constitutional rights. Is it not possible for Americans to be safe and free? Luis D. Brandeis said, “ The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well meaning, but without understanding.” Through out history it is shown that in times of crisis our government has acted in ways that we can now look back on and see were wrong. The Sedition and Alien Acts of 1798 are an example. Under the treat of war with France the acts were passed to strengthen the Federal Government.
