Where Beauty Touches Me

...roduction to the book. In this initial chapter, the author gives a brief history of natural hair, then moves on to discuss some personal experiences she has had within her shop. According to Ferrell, “there are six types of women who come into my salon today: Natural Beauty, Ms. Thang, Misfitted, Un-Made, Self-Hater and Tom-Boy. She goes on to detail characteristics of each type of client. She mentions their downfalls, but also those distinguishing qualities that make that individual unique. Amazingly, her synopsis was dead on. I have friends that could fit in either of her categories; even more so, I fit into one of her “types”. In Chapter 2, the evolution of beauty is explained. Coloring or dying of the hair is best done during the autumn season. Winter is from age 76 on. Balding or thinning of the hair may occur in this time frame. Ferrell mentions that older women in this season tend to go natural or opt to just cut their hair to a low maintenance style such as a bob or fade hairdo. A pictorial guide is given on how to shampoo and comb out natural hair, blow-dry natural hair and several five minute hairstyles are shown. Hair locks are also a topic in Where Beauty Touches Me. Ways to grow locks, grooming locks and styling locks are all mentioned. The duration of the book entails balding in males and females, and some remedies she has known o work. Extensions, twist styles and urban locks have their own chapter with a pictorial guide, care instructions and facts that revoke the myths that locs are nasty and unkempt. I would consider Where Beauty Touches Me revolutionary because Ferrell gives critique on both the client and the stylist. She states how a stylist should counsel the client on what would be good for them based on their hair, facia...
