Then, the gods immediately joined him in a strife to take control of the universe from the Titans and their king Cronus. After Zeus vanquished his father and the other Titans, he imprisoned most of them in the underworld of Tartarus, where the hundred-armed monster stood guard at the gates so that they never escaped. Afterward, Zeus drew lots with his brothers Poseidon, user of the trident, and Hades to divide the realm. Hades had the worst draw and was made lord of the underworld, ruling over the sprites and the dead. Poseidon’s prize was to become lord of the sea. Zeus won the draw and became the supreme ruler of the gods. As supreme ruler, Zeus used the thunderbolt as his weapon.
