DREAMS

...hat motivated the dream’s formation. An interpretation of a dream, describing whatever ideas, feelings and memories spontaneously arises in connection with those images. When researching the history of dreams I found that Freud believed that there are two very common methods used for interpreting dreams. The two methods are called the symbolic method and the decoding method. The symbolic method interprets the dream as whole. The decoding method breaks the dream up into parts. Then each part is analyzed and interoperated in a better understanding by using a dream dictionary. (Bulkeley,1997) After finding an article, “A Study of Dreams,” I have found that there are nine different types of dreams. The nine types of dreams are: initial, pathological, ordinary, vivid, symbolic, general dream-sensations, lucid, demon, and wrong waking up. The initial dream occurs when you begin to fall asleep. It happens when you are very tired and in between being awake and fast asleep. This isn’t something that is very common with many people. The second type of dream is pathological. The pathological dream is caused by bodily conditions. Bodily condition could be things such as nausea, ear ache, fever, or heart burn. The pathological dream takes place closer to the moments of waking up. The third type of dream found in this article was ordinary dreams. The ordinary dream is the dream that you remember having, but can’t remember the details or anything about it. This is a very common dream that occurs with many people, and can occur during anytime of your sleep. The fourth type of dream is vivid dreaming. This type of dream is just like it says, vivid. It is a dream that leaves a very strong impression on you. This is the dream that you will remember for a long amount of time after you are awake. The fifth type of dream is symbolic, also called mocking dreams. This dream is thought of; it is something that came from an unknown source. This is something that has nothing to do with the daily lives of people. The sixth type is general dream-sensations. This type of dream isn’t like its name. This kind of dream is something that is hard to take in. This is when your mind as a thought about something or someone, but you don’t actually see what you are thinking about. This thought is constant throughout your nights sleep. Lucid dreams are the seventh type of dreams mentioned in this article. This occurs when the dreamer can relate things in the day-life to unconditional thoughts in your sleep. This is one of the most complicated dreams to understand, it is like having a dream about pigs flying. You would never see a pig fly in your day-life, but at night in your dream you can see something like this. Demon dreams are the eight type of dream covered in this article. Demon dreams can occur right before or after the lucid dream. An example that I can come up with from what I understood of the article is having a dream about something dieing before the death actually takes place. I don’t believe this type of dream happens very often. The final type of dream mentioned in this article is wrong waking up. As the name says for this one, it occurs when you are awakening from a dream. When you are about you awake you feel as though something is wrong, for example you may think that you hear something. It is called wrong waking up because most people wake up in a sweat as though they were extremely freighted of something were they lie asleep. (Eeden,2004) Dreams can very with different factors such as age and gender. We’re born to be dreamers-although it apparently takes a while to get all the equipment working. Almost the entire state of being born is REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. “Young children get a lot of REM sleep, which scientists think is probably stimulation for brain growth, not real dreaming. Researchers believe children have to reach a certain level of intellectual maturity, around the age of eight or nine, before their dreams ...
