...not cut his beard off. Since they lived in the south, at that time, their tradition was for the men to always grow their beard. She got this idea when Sister said something about Stella-Rondo’s child looking like Papa-Daddy without a beard. When Papa-Daddy heard that Sister thought that he should cut it off, he went into a whole speech about how he never cut his beard in his life and he never would. He also said that she should not question him since he got her a job at the China Grove Post Office through his influence. Since Sister knew that she said nothing of the sort, she tried to defend herself, but Stella-Rondo kept lying on her and telling her not to deny it. So Sister just left the room, and went to sit in the hallway, where Papa-Daddy passed by her, not saying a word, to go lay in the hammock. While she was sitting in the hallway, her Uncle Rondo came out dressed in one of Stella-Rondo’s kimonos. She didn’t think twice about it because that day was the fourth of July, and every fourth of July Uncle Rondo drinks a bottle of “prescription” or liquor, and does crazy things for the rest of the day. Naturally, everyone believed her except Sister, and, since sister argue the subject, mother got angry with her. One thing Sister realized about Shirley T. was that she had not spoken a word or made a sound since she came, which was two days. Sister planned to convince mother that the child was Stella-Rondo’s birth child by implying to mother that the child’s brain was not all their. When mother thought about it, she remembered that Mr. Whitaker drank a lot.
