The Cold War also brought many changes to the American Presidency. Many of Truman’s opposes felt that he was running a government based on the Soviet’s happiness instead of taking the initiative. Truman’s opposing candidate then used his stance toward the Soviet Union to campaign and gain supporters for themselves. Foreign policy of the United States was also changed by the Cold War. Containment became the overall implication of the new foreign policy. America sided with corrupt governments whose interests were opposed to the American view. These corrupt governments were friendly to the United States. While the Soviet Union sought out assistance from nations who shared their same interests. Domestic Policy was affected by the Cold War both socially and economically. It was affected socially by the Soviet Union’s causing Americans to be scared out of their minds. This led a regression to Social Reforms. The economy of the United States was affected because the big industries related to war grew tremendously. The most noted events of the Cold War were the agenda of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). The HUAC utilized the Smith Act of 1940 to prosecute anyone supporting or spreading communism. Joseph McCarthy used this hysteria of communism to prosecute many government officials.
