Both countries have adopted a more western way of dressing, which consists of shorts, pants, and t-shirts; however, their traditional styles of clothing are very different. The tribal dress of Kenya consists of bright red material used like a skirt and many beaded necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Japanese people traditionally dress in a one-piece wraparound called a kimono. An anthropologist would explain these differences by saying that since the people live in different geographical areas, they have adopted their own cultures. The similarities would be explained by the fact that both cultures are made up of human beings. Psychologists are social scientists who study the human mind, people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. A psychologist would study the differences and similarities in the economy, knowledge and beliefs, communication, and recreation and leisure of Kenya and Japan because these are all thoughts and behaviours. The Kenyan economy is centered on agriculture, with manufacturing employing less than 10% of the population. In Japan however, 40% of the gross domestic product is in manufacturing. In Kenya the majority of people are Christian, 5% are Moslem and the rest follow old tribal beliefs. In Japan the main religion is Shinto and Buddhism with less than 1% of people being Christian. Both countries value education and the schooling systems are set up in the same way. In Kenya the main language is Kiswahili or Swahili and in Japan, Japanese is spoken. Both of these languages have adopted English words. In Kenya games such as Jacks and Kigogo are popular and played using rocks. Children enjoy running, climbing, and playing soccer using a ball made from old rags. Radios and televisions can be found in the villages. Japanese recreation and leisure is similar to that of North America. They enjoy sports such as baseball, golf, and swimming. They are very electronically advanced so they spend much time watching television, playing on the computer, or listening to music. A psychologist would explain the differences and similarities of these two countries by saying that because the people live in two different countries they were brought up and taught the ways and beliefs of their culture.
