...o said that sororities are full of materialistic snobs. I can’t say I would agree now. I saw a flyer for Fall Sorority Recruitment in the lobby of Brown residence hall and thought to myself, why not, I’ve always wondered what really goes on in those sorority houses. The next day I signed up to find out more. After visiting all of the eight sororities affiliated with the Greek Council I changed my mind. I walked into it keeping an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. They all don’t fit the same mold. Who knew? Sororities play a huge part in a lot of people’s lives. First of all, all sororities have an associated philanthropy, here at UMASS to name a few, Chi Omega supports the Make a Wish Foundation and Iota Gamma Upsilon supports the American Heart Association. A lot of times these sororities have more than one philanthropy such as reading for kids programs, charities for underprivileged children, or Alzheimer Foundations. Also, besides the things that the sorority does for the community they are a community with in themselves. This helps make a huge campus like UMASS Amherst a lot smaller and a lot less scary. You are given the opportunity to meet people who have the same interests; if you didn’t then you would not have agreed to join that sorority. There are dues, just like there are in any club. Those dues go towards the activities they do. Same goes for a group of friends who aren’t in a sorority, if you added up all the money that you spend on going out to dinner with your friends and buying each other gifts, most likely, it would add up to the same amount...
