Comparison of "What you pawn I will redeem" and "Latin night at the pawnshop"

In “What You Pawn I Will Redeem,” the author has a homeless Indian, Jackson Jackson, encountering other characters from different backgrounds, a Korean grocery store owner, a white cop, and a white pawnshop owner, suggesting a positive stereotype for those characters. Even though the characters are from different backgrounds, they all have the same kind of heart that is willing to help others, as the author stated, “Do you know how many good men live in this world? Too many to count!” (Alexie, last para.). The moral principles of those characters can be seen by the support they give to Jackson. The value of the regalia, however, differs due to its location. Its value in the pawnshop can be only its price. On the other hand, the regalia’s value changes once it is in Jackson’s possession. Then it comes to symbolize family and tradition. In addition, the regalia brings Jackson happiness, in which the it would not have done so if it was kept in the pawnshop. In “Latin Night at the Pawn Shop,” Espada compares the value of the instruments in the pawnshop. The instruments, previously owned by people before they were sold to the pawnshop, had value because they created music that brought life to people and their celebrations.
