In the end of this short story, the house ends up falling apart at the crack when Madeline died. Also, there are trees outside that are very gloomy and shady. The exterior isn’t very welcoming either. The house is made of rotten wood, old stones and many other unappealing materials. Just looking at the house and getting a feel of the air gives you the chills. It is a very cold place to be. Even the people who live in the house have a very mysterious, cold vibe to them. It is almost scary. The air inside and outside is of sorrow. It has a very mournful, sad vibe to it. It definitely does not put you in a good mood. Along with Roderick and Madeline, when the narrator entered their property, the story got very ‘quiet’ all of a sudden. The mood totally changed when he got around the home.
