...’s society are exposed to a considerable amount of profanity every day, and one reason for this is the music that they are listening to. Musicians often send the wrong messages to their listeners by using profanity in their music. Most profanity is not necessary, but musicians argue that they use profane language in their lyrics because it stresses certain actions or emotions. Children look to these musicians as role models and they tend to mimic their favorite musician’s behavior. If children hear their so-called role models swearing, they will often think it is ok to curse their parents or teachers. Lyrics containing acts of violence, or destructive force, is also a cause of music’s negative influences. Violence in music has been a debatable issue for many years, but with the recent school shootings many people have begun to take a closer look at the violence associated with music. Musicians such as Marilyn Manson and Eminem tend to push the envelope as much as possible when it comes to this type of music. For example, the song “Stan” by Eminem is about a fan that kills his girlfriend, puts her body in the trunk of his car, and drives off a bridge after not receiving a response to fan mail.
