Jane Addams was a leading force and founder of sociology in the United States. ... Jane is renowned for her social work and humanitarian efforts. One of her most memorable accomplishments was in 1889, Addams and a colleague, Ellen Gates Star, founded Hull House, a settlement house that served the needs of the poor in Chicago. ... In 1931 Jane was the first sociologist to win a Nobel Prize, and she shared the award with Nicholas Murray Butler.
