European Civilization
...phy, art, architecture, literature, education, and engineering were all derived from the Greeks and the Romans to create the “Greco-Roman” way of life. This fusion of cultures brought about unity amongst the European peoples. The contribution of this culture was vital in European civilization. Another essential part of European civilization were the contributions from the traditions of the Germanic tribes. The Germanic people contributed to the ethnic mix of people in the Greco-Roman world. They also enriched the manpower sources from which the Roman army recruited its soldiers. The Germanic tribes were vital in the deterioration of the western Roman Empire. The Germanic people, also called “barbarians,” played a major role in the Roman army. The Germans eventually replaced the Romans and re-established their rule over much of the European continent. The third and most important role in European civilization was the Christian religion. It is most important because it absorbed and assimilated over the other two factors in European civilization: culture, and the Germanic tribes. Christianity advised the Germanic peoples and presented them with new ideals for living and social cooperation. Christianity became the common ground amongst cultures that united people in European society. Christianity brought about Monasticism and missionary activity.
