In this example, John Proctor maintains his dignity, even if it means confessing to the town about committing adultery against his wife because he knows he is a married man and has much love in his heart for Elisabeth. Another great example of this is when Mr. Danforth persuades Elizabeth Proctor to talk John into confessing and she agrees. John, desiring to live, agrees to confess. The court insists that the confession be made public and that Proctor sign his name on a document saying he has committed these witchcraft crimes, when he really has not.
