... instead of prison. The next great problem facing the criminal justice system is the number of young people who are becoming involved in violence, drugs, and all kinds of vandalism. The textbook indicates that the U.S. juvenile courts process around 1.8 million delinquency cases each year. This number increased an enormous 44% from 1989 to 1999—and continues to rise. Two solutions to this problem would be: 1) To get the children familiar with the criminal justice system at an early age—especially poor, inner city kids. Utilize more programs in the schools to “scare” them away from a life of crime, and always show them that there are other, better alternatives—like staying in school or going to an after school program at YMCAs or other participating organizations. 2) The most important change that could be made to curb juvenile crime would be parents who are more involved and interested in their children’s lives. Parents need to talk to their kids, find out where they’re going, who they’ll be with, and basically just instill some values and discipline in their children at an early age. It is impo...
