The Painted Door
... there is way better out there; why not change if we are unhappy? Marriage is a commitment. These days, people seem to care less about marriage and divorce whenever they encounter little problems. But marriage is a challenge. If you don’t help each other out you will never survive. That’s why I think John should pay more attention to Ann or else they will fall apart. I enjoy the way the author uses the weather to represent Ann’s emotions. “Even the distant farmsteads she could see served only to intensify a sense of isolation”. The weather seems so powerful to her. When it’s nice outside, we usually are happier. But if it’s raining outside, we feel more down and tired. He writes very flowing sentences about the weather and Ann’s feelings. “…his absents for a day should still concern her.” Ann knew it was going to be a very big storm and she just wanted to feel safer by staying with her husband, which is a very normal feeling I assume. Instead of relaxing this winter they were too impatient, because they wanted spring to come back as soon as possible. “He’ll be here soon”. During the whole story she believes that he will be back in time. At least we feel the trust in their relationship. Trust is the most important element between husband and wife. With out trust, you cannot believe in love or in faith. It’s like the key to love. When Steven came to rescue Ann from the storm, she felt safe again. He warmed her up and took care of her. But that was John’s task. When two people of opposite sex are in a frightful situation, they tend to be attracting faster sexually and emotionally. Ann compares John and Steven as if she w...
