Suspense in fiction results primarily from the reader’s identification with and concern about lead characters who are complex, convincing, and appealing. An example of this from the book is when Sarah and Malcolm are in the trailer repairing the baby Tyrannosaur’s broken leg, the Tyrannosaur’s parents came and started kicking the trailer around until it was about to fall off a cliff. The anticipation of violence is also important to horror. The anticipation of violence is infinitely more suspenseful than violence itself. When King’s jeep broke down and he started running from raptors it was just obvious they would catch up and rip him to shreds, and they did. Another scene where you anticipated violence was during the trailer scene. Malcolm said, “The perimeter lights just turned on. I think the sensor was activated. But we don’t see anything out there.” When the Tyrannosaurs were kicking around the trailer and it was about to go over the cliff it seemed that everyone was going to have a horrible death, but it ended up turning out okay. Even though nothing happened to them during the situation the anticipation of what might happen was really exciting. The way people’s senses react also play a big part in horror. When horror is good it can make your skin crawl, your pulse race, your body break into a cold sweat, and your hair stand on end.
