...s day and age. Authoritative parents make it their duty to keep you from hanging out with your friends or getting your license. Boyfriends and girlfriends are absolutely out of the question, school comes first. When a child reaches the age of 16, they will get a job, according to the authoritative parent. An A- is unacceptable along with missing a day of school, regardless if your sick or if your dog just died. Any piercings or tatoos will lead to a life of delinquency or death. Teens that express themselves differently are the devil. Make-up is out of the question. It looks “trampy”, unless of course you’re planning to become a prostitute or a clown. The strict parent recommends 3 minutes as a sufficient time for TV viewing. They believe TV will rot the mind. Surveillance cameras are a necessity for the authoritative parent. These parents need to feel that they have complete control over every aspect of their child’s life. They are fixing the mistakes they made as adolescents through their own children. It is basically “their way or the highway.” The permissive parents is much more laid back than the authoritative parent. They give their child a sense of freedom, and allow them to make their own decisions. Unlike the authoritative parent, they want their children to have everything that they didn’t have as a child. Going out with friends is OK as long as curfew is obeyed. These parents are aware of what it is like to be a teenager. They allow their children to be well rounded and know that it is important to have a balance between social life and school. These types of parents will say please and often reward their children for a job well done. The permissive parent does not find it necessary to raise their voice. A teenager’s privacy is respected. It is OK to get a C on a Math test. The permissive parent will say, “You did your best. Try to study harder next time.” This parent has established a strong bond with their child that the authoritative parent could never achieve. A permissive parent is the ideal parent for many teens.
