... promote excessive concentration on achievement where athletes push themselves to the point that they do harm to their bodies. My senior year I pushed my body too far and kept myself in a football game to long and I ended up breaking my collar bone and dislocating my shoulder for the sole reason that the reward of winning was more important then my body. The concept, “the people act the way they do because of self-interest”, applies to me in football. Ever since I was young my family instilled in me the love for the game of football. We would play every weekend in the backyard with my dad as the all-time quarterback, and my brother and I switching off running routes and guarding each other. That led to getting U of I football season tickets with family and friends. Every home game we would get together and have a tailgate. Before and after the game my friends and I would engage in a game of tackle football which led to organized football when I joined a team, the blue devils, in seventh grade and then to me trying out for the high school team. The next concept states “The interests of people with similar situations are similar. These similar interests form the people into classes. Each class has its own interests.” This concept applies to me and many kids my own age who also play football. When my friends play beside me we call ourselves a “team”. When I played with my friends I felt united together for one “purpose” and one “purpose” only which is for our “team” to achieve victory. I believe that you could exchange the word class for “team” and the word interest for “purpose”. The sentence would now read “…we call ourselves a class…united together for one interest and one interest only…our class to achieve victory.” By joining a team I created my own class which automatically gave my class and I the interests to become the best you can be at your particular position and to achieve victory. This takes me to my next concept, “the interests of each class are in conflict with the interests of the other classes.” In football all teams, play for the sole reason to achieve victory but when two teams play each other it creates a conflict of interests. You have a situation where one team wants victory while the other team wants victory as well. Unfortunately though, for every winner your have a loser and winning makes me feel that my team is superior and the direct opposite when I lose. All this creates structural inequa...
