In June 1807, the Leopard, a British warship, ordered the United States frigate Chesapeake, to stop and be searched for deserters. The Chesapeake refused to be stopped and the British ship fired on it killing and injuring many men. Trouble started with the Indians as many settlers moved west. Under the leadership of Tecumseh, the Indians united in hope of driving the settlers out of their lands. The American settlers and westerners believed that the British were providing the Indians with weapons. Southern and Westerners also wanted new lands to settle. They argued that if the United States declared war on England, Canada and Florida could be captured. Because of these reasons, on June 18, 1812 the United States declared war on England. At first, the war did not go well for the United States. The Unites States was unprepared for war with England and the Indians quickly sided with the British.
